When have you last been excited about Christianity? That's the question Pastor Ed began his message with this week. We heard the story of Philip told in John 1. Philip is so excited to discover that what he's studied in scripture for years is now standing in the flesh before him, that he hurries to find his friend Nathanael and invite him to meet Jesus. When Nathanael reacted with sketpicism ("Can anything good come out of Nazareth"? John 1:46 NRSV) rather than excitement, Philip did not try to argue with him or reason with him. Philip simply invited Nathanael to see for himself. What can we learn from Philip? Pastor Ed talked about participating in a group where we can learn about Jesus and recognize the work of God. As we see God at work we can share these discoveries with others and invite them to participate in the life of Christ themselves. After the message, we took time to answer reflection questions. As people in the morning discussion group shared reactions to the initial question Pastor Ed threw out, some common themes emerged. Although the experiences shared were different, most involved one if not all of the following: learning something new about God/Christ, realizing they've made it though a difficult time without giving up, and sharing with other Christians and hearing their faith experiences.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law and the Prophets: Jesus, Joseph’s son, from Nazareth.”
